LAB Assignment #1 for CMPE 413/CMSC 711

Due: Wednesday, Sept 15th

Description: Read the Layout Tutorial and create an Inverter layout.

• Logon to your cs account:

Type `telnet sunserver1.cs.umbc.edu' without the quotes.

For new accounts, your ssn is your passwd. Please change it immediately by typing passwd.

(Send me an email if you are not able to access your account by Monday afternoon).

 

• Download the .cshrc file from my web page as a replacement for the default .cshrc file.

 

• Type `source .cshrc' without the quotes in the sunserver1 xterm.

 

• Copy the tutorial files to your home directory:

Type `mkdir cadence' without the quotes in your home directory.

Type `cd /cds/ic-qsr/tools/dfII/samples/tutorials/le' without the quotes.

Type `cp -r cell_design ~/cadence' without the quotes.

Type `cd ~/cadence/cell_design' without the quotes.

 

• Setup your X windows environment:

Type `setenv DISPLAY machine_name.cs.umbc.edu:0' without the quotes in the sunserver1 xterm. Substitute the name of the PC (e.g. pcecs237-9) for machine_name in the above ! DONT FORGET the :0 part !

Type 'xhost +' without the quotes in an xterm that runs on the local machine. This is the ONLY command that you type in the xterm running on the local machine. The rest of the commands given below are entered in the sunserver1 xterm !

 

• Execute the tutorial help application:

Type 'openbook&' without the quotes. This should bring up the help window.

Click on the 'Custom IC Layout' link in the lower left hand corner.

Click 'Layout' and then 'Cell Design Tutorial'.

 

• Run the layout editor: icfb:

Type 'icfb&' without the quotes in an xterm.

YOU MUST BE IN the ~/cadence/cell_design OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE TUTORIAL.

Follow the instructions given in `openbook'.

Report Requirements:

1) Describe the steps involved in creating the layout (one page only).

2) Generate a printout of the layout (black-and-white is fine).

3) Include a labeled schematic diagram of the inverter.

4) Grading will be based on the completeness of your write-up as well as the compactness of the layout. The lab for next week will build upon the layout you create in this lab.
